ABOUT THE MIX:

When it comes to techno, nothing beats a warehouse. Paradoxically, techno can be big and bold, and yet at the same time claustrophobic. Well, at least for me. Think about it… a large space for the sound to fill, then add people, and that same large sound is now bouncing not only off the walls, but the people as well. And when there’s enough people, it feels even more personal. Mixes even sound and feel closer or tighter to me. Does that make sense? It’s definitely how I’ve felt at various events: Output in NYC certainly did that, Warehouse On Watts here in Philly does when there’s enough people, and events in Amsterdam really do this too. So, while it’s just me, here at home, I wanted to bring you that hot, sweaty, “I’m-at-a-warehouse-techno-event-at-3am-and-I-don’t-want-to-leave-ever” kind of mix this month. Not an easy mood to hit. Now, here’s the interesting bit: Some of the mixes I’ve heard at those that pass the 3am mark, are bouncing between various styles. From dub techno to harder, darker places, then ascends to where there’s a few identifiable tracks, before heading back into the depths of the unknown, where the sound and its texture are more important than who produced it. Other times, the mixes are so well constructed (and done on the fly like this too), that it feels like only one song was played throughout the entire set. I prefer the former, where traveling through the mix brings new sonic neighborhoods in to view, and listening range.
